The New Amsterdam Hospital Will Once Again Open Its Doors

David Schulner, the creator, executive producer, and showrunner of New Amsterdam, is working on a spinoff series based on the popular NBC program, Deadline reports.

According to the site, the series, which is currently titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, is slated to premiere thirty years after the first one. Luna Goodwin, the daughter of Dr. Max Goodwin (played by Ryan Eggold), would assume the role of Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.

It has been almost 14 months since Molly Griggs’s portrayal of an adult Luna in the series finale revealed to fans what looked like the setup for a new spinoff.

In the closing moments of the show, an adult Luna addresses the medical team in her new role as medical director and shares how her father encouraged her to pursue a career in medicine.

“I wanted to start by asking you the same thing my father asked his staff every hour of every single day: how can I help?” She added afterward.

Deadline says that viewers may anticipate the show to “explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future,” though it is unknown if Griggs or Eggold will make an appearance in the new series.

In March 2022, NBC announced that New Amsterdam will conclude its five-season run. Many fans were shocked to learn of the news because the show had been renewed for three seasons in January 2020. NBC reported that the show was averaging close to 10 million viewers at the time it was in the midst of its second season.

In addition to Eggold, the original series starred Anupam Kher, Tyler Labine, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, and Jocko Sims.

“When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?'”  said Universal Television President Erin Underhill in a statement following the announcement.

“Over the last four seasons, David, Peter and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We’re so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam to life. Bravo,” the statement went on.

The show’s Instagram shared a message to viewers following its season conclusion, saying, “Thank you #DamFam, we hope we were able to help. ❤️ All 5 seasons of #NewAmsterdam are streaming now on @peacocktv.”
