Apple has Renewed Monarch for a Second Season and Hopes to Produce Additional Godzilla Spinoffs

The first live-action series set in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” has been confirmed to return for a second season on Apple TV+. Along with the upcoming “Monarch” season, the streaming service and Legendary have announced a new multi-series partnership that will see the creation of several spin-off shows based on the property.

Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV+, said in a statement that “‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, led by the brilliance of Chris, Matt, Kurt, Wyatt and the incredibly gifted talented cast and creative team,”  “We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise, as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.”

The first season of “Monarch” was set right after “Godzilla,” the 2014 MonsterVerse film, which was the first in the franchise. It featured two step-siblings, Ren Watabe, a recent arrival, and Anna Sawai from “Shōgun,” as they looked for answers after their father passed away. They eventually find themselves in the company of Kurt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, a veteran of Monarch, the enigmatic government organization responsible with monitoring Titans such as Godzilla. They track Godzilla together and unearth more information about Monarch. The show was fantastic, seamlessly blending into the established MonsterVerse narrative while jumping back and forth in time (Wyatt Russell as Shaw in the 1950s).

Executive producers of the upcoming season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” include Jen Roskind, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, Matt Shakman, Andrew Colville, and showrunners Chris Black and Matt Fraction. Toho Co., Ltd., the company that owns the Godzilla character, is represented by executive producers Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita.

With over $365 million in revenue globally, “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” is now enjoying great success at the box office. Godzilla and Kong must work together to defeat a brand-new adversary in the newest film: the evil Skar King, the ominous ruler of Hollow Earth. The new movie is a delightfully lighthearted diversion from the more serious “Godzilla Minus One,” the Japanese Godzilla film that debuted this winter and unexpectedly won an Oscar for its stunning special effects.
