Sony Shuts Down PlayStation Stars Loyalty Program, Ending July 2025

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that its PlayStation Stars loyalty program will be discontinued. The company revealed that as of today, the program has stopped accepting new members, and no new campaigns or rewards will be added. Existing users will still be able to earn points until July 23, 2025, after which the program will be fully shut down.

In a statement on the PlayStation Blog, Grace Chen, Sony’s VP of Network Advertising, Loyalty, and Licensed Merchandise, reflected on the program’s legacy:

“We created PlayStation Stars to celebrate our players. The program has helped foster a deeper connection with fans around the world.”

Launched in 2022, PlayStation Stars offered rewards for playing games, including digital collectibles and PlayStation Store credits. While it initially raised eyebrows due to its resemblance to NFT-based systems, it ultimately focused on user engagement through traditional loyalty mechanisms.

Some of the most popular features included opportunities to earn $5 or $25 PlayStation Store credits, though the system was later adjusted to prevent excessive point farming by users.

Sony emphasized that this move comes as part of a broader shift in strategy:

“We’ve learned a lot… and have decided to refocus our efforts. We’re evaluating key insights and looking at future opportunities to build upon these learnings.”

Members choosing to leave the program after today will not be able to rejoin and will lose their accumulated points. Users are encouraged to redeem any outstanding rewards before the final shutdown date.

As Sony retires this chapter of its loyalty strategy, the gaming community will be watching to see what new forms of engagement or rewards systems might emerge in its place.
