The San Francisco 49ers on Monday formally added safety Tony Jefferson on a one-year contract. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the signing Monday morning. In a comparing move, the 49ers released defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun to keep their roster at 91 players.
Regularly offseason rosters are restricted to 90 players. The 49ers are afforded an additional roster spot to oblige OL Alfredo Gutierrez by means of the NFL’s International Pathway Program.
Jefferson adds veteran depth to a packed safety room that incorporates a slew of young, inexperienced players. He’s played 98 games and began 66 across seven NFL seasons subsequent to signing on with the Cardinals in 2013 as an undrafted newbie. He spent the 2017-19 seasons with the Ravens, yet his 2019 campaign was stopped at five games as a result of a torn ACL. Jefferson didn’t play last season.
To account for Jefferson, the 49ers released Boddy-Calhoun. He played in one game in special teams for San Francisco last season while they managed a host of injuries in the secondary. They re-signed Boddy-Calhoun this offseason. The 28-year-old has played in 47 games with 22 beginnings across parts of five NFL seasons.
